Position is Everything!
It is an honour to be the Head Photographer for the Halton Fashion Show. The show, organized by Triton Events Founder, Mariline Gheda, has several events each year with the goal to raise funds for the Milton District Hospital Foundation. To this end, it has been very successful! In cooperation with other local fundraising organizations, over $1 Million has been raised for the hospital!

A fashion setting such as this can be very challenging for a photographer. The forecast called for overcast skies (which would have been perfect) but as I arrived it was bright and sunny and as the day progressed the sky changed from sun to cloud and back again at irregular intervals. How do you plan for that as a photographer? In my particular case, it was where I chose to sit.
The runway was in an "L" shape with the first stretch running North to South on a red runner
and the second stretch running East to West on a white runner. I chose a spot at the end of the red runway right at the bend. When the sun was out it was to the model's left at just the right angle to not cast any harsh shadows on the face and where the model did not often have to fight the urge to squint. Because of the occasional breeze, the runners had to be held down with gaffer tape but this is easily remove in post. Add a little background blur and the result is a set of dreamy fashion runway shots!
Another reason I chose the spot where I did was that all the other photographers chose to sit at the west end of the white runner. Not only do I despise having to fight for elbow room during a fashion show, but my particular position meant that I could get unique shots that the others couldn't, since I was the only one at that spot! And also, at the west end, the sun was in the face of the models as they came toward you which could present an additional challenge in capturing good facial expression.
Overall, from a photographer's perspective, the show was a rousing success and a plethora of amazing shots were captured by myself and the other photographers present.
There was ample opportunity for red carpet and individual model shoots as well as most models are happy to pose before or after the show!
So, at your next outdoor show, look for spots that give you unique angles and where the models will love you for not making their face scrunch up in nsquid mode!
